After a day of school lock down in the Gardena High School district in Los Angeles California yesterday January 18, 2011 caused by a gun shooting incident , another in campus lock down is currently conducted today January 19, 2011 due to an off campus shooting incident.
An LAUSD officer, identified as Jeffrey Stenroos, an eight-year veteran of the LAUSD police force has been shot at point blank and wounded outside the El Camino Real High School in Los Angeles California.
It has been reported that the officer was shot in the chest after he confronted a man suspected of breaking into a car parked behind the school. The shooting incident happened outside of the school property near Manton Ave and Burbank Blvd, east of the high school campus.
After the officer confronted the suspect, the suspect pulled a gun and shot the officer in the chest. The officer fell on the ground and the suspect was able to run away. Someone close to the crime seen saw the incident and immediately grabbed the officer's radio transmitter to report the incident. 911 to the rescue and the officer was brought to Northridge Hospital for emergency treatment.
Luckily, the officer was on his ballistic vest, bullet proof vest and that saved his life. He only incured a minimal wound right above his heart caused by the impact of the bullet.
He is currently under treatment in the hospital. Nothing serious. The patient is alert and responding to the tests being conducted. He is doing well so far. He is with his wife and is waiting for the blood result and will be released anytime soon.
Meanwhile, the suspect who was described as a white male in his 40's with light brown shoulder-length hair wearing a dark bomber jacket or hoodie and blue jeans is still on the loose which prompted the Los Angeles Police officers to lock down the involved streets, the El Camino Real High School campus and quite a few residential areas.
The officers are currently searching from yard to yard, every garage door, dog houses, crawspaces, trash cans and every where. They are also checking door to door and room to room inside 9 schools who are situated within 7 square mile parameter from where the incident happened. The students have been complaining because they haven't eatin their lunch yet. They are starving and can not use the restroom as well. The affected schools are as follows:
1.) El Camino Real High School 2.) Hale Middle School 3.) Calabash Elementary School 4.) Lockhurst Elementary School 5.) Pomelo Elementary School 6.) Haynes Elementary School 7.) Woodlake Elementary School 8.) Welby Way Elementary School 9.) Miguel Leonis Continuation School
There are over 9,000 kids locked down today. Yesterday in the Gardena high school, there were over 3,000 kids locked down inside the rooms due to a gun shooting incident. A gun accidentally blew off inside a backpack when a male student slammed his backpack on the desk hitting 1 17 year old male classmate on the neck and 1 17 year old female classmate on the head.
At this point, nobody is in custody. The suspect is still at large so the search could take up from 6-10 hours.
Thousands of students have been released already. So far, there are only about 3 schools that are remained locked down. They have been sitting inside their classrooms for about 4 hours already.
The students that have been released already are from the following schools :
1.) Calabash Elementary School 2.) Lockhurst Elementary School 3.) Pomelo Elementary School 4.) Haynes Elementary School 5.) Welby Way Elementary School 6.) Miguel Leonis Continuation School
The students that remained on lock down are from :
1.) El Camino Real High School
2.) Hale Middle School
3.) Woodlake Elementary School
As o 4:27 pm Dismissal at Hale Middle School has begun with 300 Special Education students, who are being bused now. They will head westbound. After the Special Education students are dismissed, the school will begin dismissing the rest of 1,500 students class by class. Parents/guardians may pick up their student southbound on Platt.
As of 5:52 pm, all the students have been released from lockdown including El Camino Real High School, Hale Middle School & woodlake Elementary School.
The suspect is still at large.
