iphone 3G is the second batch of iphone products designed and marketed by Apple Inc. which was release in San Francisco California on June 9, 2008. iphone 3G is called the second generation iphone because it was released after the original iphone called the 1st generation iphone was released in January 9, 2007.

iphone 3G belongs to the family of smartphones, an advanced type of cellular phones with advanced capabilities. Smartphones run a complete operating system and can be considered as a Personal Pocket Computer (PPC) with built-in mobile phone functionallity.

The iPhone 3G runs Apple’s iOS operating system, the same operating system used on the previous iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod touch. Basically, iphone 3G 2nd generation looks almost identical to the orginal 1st generation iphone except that the body is slightly thicker at its center and the edges are tapered and thinner than the original.

The 2nd generation is a combination of an iPod, a tablet PC, a digital camera and a cellular phone in one system. It also also features "A-GPS" (Assisted global positioning system) which combines triangulation using cellular towers with a GPS receiver.

Unfortunately, iPhone 3G does not support Flash, Java or MMS. Browsing websites using flash or java scripts is not possible. Built-in Bluetooth supports wireless earpieces but not stereo audio, laptop tethering or FTP.

iPhone 3G connects to the internet via 3G (third generation) mobile broadband technologies like UMTS and HSDPA in addition to EDGE. These features enable faster data downloads and turn-by-turn navigation with Maps.

IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications - 20000) is known as 3G or 3rd Generation. It is a generation of standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunications services fulfilling specifications by the International Telecommunication Union. Its application services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, mobile Internet access, video calls and mobile TV, all in a mobile environment. A 3G system allows simultaneous use of speech and data services.

Like any other iphones, 3G is sensitive to fingertip contact. The touchscreen measures 9cm or 3.5 inches LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) with a resolution of 320-by-480 (HVGA) at 163 ppi which is designed for a bare finger or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. It comes with a scratch-resistant glass sitting on top of the display.

LCD is a thin, flat electronic visual display that uses the light modulating properties of liquid crystals.

iPhone 3G still includes a Samsung 32-bit RISC ARM11 620 MHz processor (underclocked to 412 MHz), a PowerVR MBX Lite 3D GPU, and 128 MB of eDRAM. Its internal hardware is based on the original iphone.

The camera features a fixed-focus 2.0 megapixel like the original iPhone. It has no optical zoom lense, no flash or autofocus. It does not come with a video capability but can be made possible through various video applications that can be integrated into the device.

A 30-pin dock connector is supplied and comes with the package which is used to charge and synchronize the device with the computer and to connect to various iPhone accessories.

Another significant feature of iPhone 3G is the integration of the Apple Store which allows users to purchase and install third party applications to the device.
